Ruke + Mark’s Nigerian wedding in Edmonton

Location- Edmonton AB/ Alberta Avenue Community League
Fave moment – Ruke and her crew dancing down the aisle!

Ruke and Mark’s wedding was the first Nigerian wedding I’ve photographed, and the first ever traditional Urhobo wedding held here in Edmonton!

This wedding had EVERYTHING (insert voice of Stefan from SNL) – dudes in fedoras, a formal exchange of bottles of gin, cash flying through the air, the communist manifesto, gorgeous Nigerian outfits, photogenic charcuterie!

And Ruke and Mark are kind of the best people ever, I’m friends with many of their friends. I still can’t help but smile when I think of this awesome day 6 months later.

Ruke and Mark went to the spot they first met – the Cariwest Festival in downtown Edmonton. It was super busy and crowded on that fateful day several years ago, and Ruke couldn’t find a place to sit and chill out between dance performances, so Mark kindly offered her a place at his table in the beer gardens. The rest is history.

Cariwest is always busy, obviously a chaotic place to take photos, but that’s part of it! That’s the magic. Those crowds are the reason these 2 shared that table years ago, and I wanted to capture that busyAF vibe in their photos. Taking your photos at a location that holds personal meaning and happy memories is a great idea!

Congrats, Ruke and Mark, your wedding day was even more fun than it looks! I hope there’s more Nigerian weddings in my future, because I love them!
